Connecticut Approves New Gambling Options, Including Sports Betting and Online Gambling

The chief executive of Connecticut, Ned Lamont, has come to terms with the Mohegan Tribe to introduce fresh wagering options within the state, encompassing sports betting and online gambling.

The accord, signed by Lamont and the Mohegan Tribe leader, James Gessner II, establishes a 20% levy on internet gambling and a 13.75% tax on sports wagering.

The agreement provides substantial concessions to the Connecticut Lottery Corporation, which will obtain the authority to operate 15 physical sports betting locations and a digital sports betting platform. These locations encompass new retail sites in Hartford and Bridgeport.

The Lottery Corporation will also have the right to sublet some of these locations to Sportech, the state’s authorized horse racing operator.

The licensing agreement has an initial duration of ten years with a five-year option to extend and could generate “tens of millions of dollars in new income” for the state, the Governor’s office stated. The agreement needs approval from the U.S. Secretary of the Interior before it can become effective.

“This agreement embodies months of diligent effort and commitment to reaching a deal that is advantageous for the citizens of Connecticut and propels our state forward in the realm of gaming,” Governor Lamont clarified.

Connecticut’s chief executive, Ned Lamont, conveyed his appreciation for the Mohegan Tribe’s collaboration in reaching a mutually advantageous accord. He commended their readiness to engage in discussions and discover a resolution that serves both the tribe and the state.

Mohegan Tribe leader Rodney Butler mirrored these sentiments, underscoring the Mohegan Sun’s satisfaction in attaining this agreement. He emphasized the agreement’s capacity to generate tax income from sports and online wagering, aligning Connecticut with other states and stimulating the state’s economic growth.

The statement did not address the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, who share exclusive gambling privileges with the Mohegan Tribe in Connecticut. Negotiations between the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe and the state are in progress.
